Today, we are going to talk about YouTube. Are your kiddos on it? Are they using it? Do they have to use it for school? How can we wrestle this issue? Because they say that when a kiddo is on YouTube, there are usually two to three clicks away from pornography or something else that you don't want them to see. So how do we wrestle this day, too?

Speaker 1: (00:48)
So when I get started on this recording for today's episode, I just want to give you an update on what I talk about towards the end. When I talk about ways to help protect your children. And just interject that since I recorded this episode, that bark home was released as well as a new pinwheel phone. So if you have not heard about those two things go a couple episodes back. I believe it's episode 32 for bark home in 33 for pinwheel phone and check those out because they are definitely amazing, amazing options for you now to help you navigate this and to help you monitor at least for bark home, monitor the school related tech and all of that. But this episode still has a very valuable information for you related to giving your kids access to YouTube. Um, but I just want to tell you that what I shared toward the end is not exactly completely updated.

Speaker 1: (01:43)
Cause I recorded this episode before I knew bark home was officially out. Okay. Alright. Enjoy the episode. Okay. So when the lid came off of our can of worms and worms were everywhere, I quite honestly had no clue about YouTube, no clue. I truly had no clue. He keeps saying that because it about blew my mind when I started to look at search history and subscriptions and things like that. And just like I've said in other episodes, I can't emphasize enough how much you need to be in their business and how much you need to have some type of monitoring system and wifi and all of the things in place because curiosity killed the cat, right? Is that how the phrase goes? But anyways, kiddos are curious and they're going to go down rabbit holes and YouTube is one place that so many kids are being exposed to things.

Speaker 1: (02:37)
And we don't realize it. Even the YouTube kids. I think that's what it's called. YouTube kids is dangerous because sometimes ads will pop up that are inappropriate or it'll take you to the next video that is not appropriate. It truly is maddening. Just like I've said in other episodes that they cannot get a handle on this. So YouTube has parental controls where you connect your Google account, you turn on restricted mode and then you can lock it. But the kiddo can easily use a different browser and not log in and still access this. Unless you have things set up in your home to filter out the website. So I'm gonna share with you a couple of different things that you can use if you were in the situation where your kid is having to watch videos on YouTube. And if you happen to be an educator, a teacher, or you're a parent doing homeschooling, this is a way for you to help control what they're being exposed to.

Speaker 1: (03:38)
So I'm hearing from a lot of parents that they are seeing that their teachers requiring them to watch YouTube video on YouTube for class. And then, you know, they're at work or they somehow cannot like supervise a resection of the day, like who can write. And so how do they monitor this? There's just no way for them to get around it, that they used to have control set in place. And they had, you know, the whole thing like locked down and stuff when we were before March, 2020 and all this pandemic stuff, but now it's hard to navigate it. And it truly, truly is like I've said in other episodes, if they can scrub the, uh, Facebook or somewhere on the internet, for some thing, that's deemed to be false news, why can they not get ahold of this? But it's the same situation. The predators are savvy and people that are just wanting to put information out there, find ways around it by misspelling things and different ways to where it doesn't get caught in the filters.

Speaker 1: (04:41)
And so we as parents must be proactive in this space. So if you have kids that are needing to be on YouTube simply to watch certain videos, there are three websites that I'm going to share with you that I want you to check out. One is called safe search kids.com. You use this to search for videos so you can put the link in, or you can search for videos on a certain topic. And then it pulls it up through their website and that's where the kid watches it. So you give them that link and that's where they watch it. They're not on regular YouTube. The second one is called safe youtube.net. And this one you put in the link. So say that their teacher gives them a link. It's a YouTube link. You put it into this website and that is the link or that's how you have them access.

Speaker 1: (05:28)
The video is through safe youtube.net. A third one is called viewpure.com. And this one you can put in the link specifically, or you can do a search on a topic and it's going to pull in videos that are appropriate and that aren't, you know, somehow classified as pornography or explicit or inappropriate. Okay? So these things are all fine and dandy unless your kiddo is older and they know how to look at other browsers and find in other ways. So the ways that you can look at monitoring for older kids is to use Google family link and that you just sign up with Google and then it sets up with the browser. That's still limited if they go and use a different browser and then screen time controls with your Apple device to block specific sites or only allow YouTube in restricted mode. Like I mentioned at the top and then bark to help filter and then check with your internet provider, a cell phone provider or the air, or get a wifi filter with parental controls.

Speaker 1: (06:32)
So it's kind of the things that I've mentioned in other episodes, but just wanted you to be aware that there is a way to kind of help you navigate the thing of YouTube. Be aware that just playing YouTube is dangerous for your kiddos and they may be exposed to things on there and, you know, use some of these tools to help you out. Okay. All right. Short and sweet episode, I hope you found this helpful grab at your subscription to bark use code, be that mom for a discount and grab a gab wireless phone or gizmo.
