Tips for building an internal army of defense to protect yourself and your family!

Are you scared? Prepared?

Omg, it is amazing how much everyone is in a frenzy over this coronavirus thing. I don't know what to make of all of it and don't really know what is going to happen, but do have a couple of tips to share with you for approaching staying healthy in general, that have helped me and my family tremendously.

In addition to external hygiene, such as handwashing, other things I would consider to sidestep the panic are

  1. the nutrients you give your body daily
  2. reducing your risk of exposure.

Just as our animals need good nutrition and our cars need gas and oil, nutrition is our lifeline to health, like a tiny army, ready to defend our body from invaders. Giving ourselves high quality food is the most fundamental and most important thing we can do each day for ourselves.

A few basics on nutrition:

1. Whole food is always best (versus pre-packaged with an expiration date), and how it is prepared is important in terms of whether nutrients are destroyed when cooking. (Organically grown, fresh and raw are ideal, then baked or grilled versus fried)

2. Not all serving sizes are created equal, but in general eat veggies most, then add on fruit and lean meats, plus small servings of healthy fats, like nuts and seeds.

3. Water water water water water water water water... whenever you feel tired, sluggish, have headache, etc, think about how much water you have been drinking. Chances are, not enough. Strive for 64 to 80 ounces of water per day minimum, unless advised otherwise by your doctor. Water is like a lubricant and helps everything else function better. (Coming from a former sweet tea addict, you will notice a difference if you get more water consistently.)

4. Consider drinking a daily densely nutritious smoothie such as the one I drink, daily, to provide your army with some extra ammunition you will not find in regular food, for an affordable price that is absolutely less than you'd pay for a fast food meal with no nutrition. As I mentioned earlier, preparation of this matters for preservation of nutrients, so finding it cheap oftentimes means the nutrition has not been preserved, so you might just be buying a bag of powder with very little health benefits. Now for reducing risk of exposure!!

  1. Wash hands.
  2. When in public, be mindful of what you touch. Disinfect things you must touch, like handles on shopping carts, arm rests and fold out tables on airplanes; and avoid touching handrails on stairs and escalators, handles on doors, etc. Use your elbow or back to push doors open.
  3. Avoid going out in public and places with large crowds where exposure may not be able to be controlled, when possible. (Church, shopping malls, large gatherings of people, gyms, etc) (Another reason to workout from home using a virtual workout library!! JS!)

I hope you have found this helpful!
